Are the German Cardinals Tacitly Revealing Their Inner Demons?

Most of them fail to greet the pope: a tacit expression of their hatred for what he stands for?

Fr. Z tells us not to read anything into this video (http://wdtprs.com/blog/2011/09/things-are-not-always-what-they-seem-at-first-glance/)...

But I'm not completely convinced...

Please, don't read into this at all. Look closely. Twelfth in line after the first cardinal is Monsignor Marini, the top Papal MC. As you know, nobody is closer to the Holy Father than he is, and nobody certainly is going to know protocol as well as he. Notice that he doesn't shake Pope Benedict's hand.
What the Pope was doing was introducing his cardinals to whoever the other guy was. Either just before or after he had been introduced to some German government officials, and we saw the same scene played out in reverse.

Seriously, don't worry about this.

From what I understand, from a number of sources, is that His Holiness is introducing the president/official/politician to the Bishops. The hand is a gesture of introduction, and not an invitation to "shake."

I think the few that shook were simply not paying attention, or were just confused.

You can actually see the Pope saying things to each Bishop as he approaches, which would follow if he were introducing the president/official/politician.

I am not entirely convinced either. As you can see, they aren't just *not shaking his hand* like they're supposed too, they're backing off, looking disgusted, distancing themselves, and so on.

Yes. Members of the pope's own entourage publicly air their disgust for their boss. I'm sure that is what is going on.

I feel sorry for the pope that he's surrounded by a bunch of dupes who actually think its proper protocol to grope for his hand when he's clearly trying to introduce the German president (i.e. Kasper).

What one does see quite clearly is that the Pope's extended hand is repeatedly refused. It's obvious that at least he was expecting a handshake, and I don't see how it can be courteous to refuse.
